The Callaway girls’ basketball team made it two wins this week. The Cavaliers went on the road and dominated Rutland 54-31, claiming a comfortable region win.
The vaunted Cavalier defense was on full display in the first half. The Hurricanes could muster just a measly one point in the first quarter before adding just six in the second.
Callaway’s offense may not have been at their peak on Thursday, but it did not matter as the Cavaliers went on the road and led wire-to-wire.
Callaway took a 15-1 advantage after the opening quarter before adding to the lead in the second quarter, taking a 25-7 lead into halftime.
With such a dominant lead at the break, Callaway was able to let its foot off the gas in the second half. The Cavaliers rotated in some of their reserves, but they still outscored the home team 29-24 over the final two quarters.
Kenzi Howard set the tone early for the Cavaliers, scoring more points in the first quarter (8) than the entire Rutland team could muster in the entirety of the first half (7). Howard would finish as the game’s leading scorer with 16 points while also coming away with six rebounds and six steals.
Aubrey Chelcy and Shakenya Wortham each scored 10 points apiece for Callaway. The former also added six rebounds and six steals to her stat line. Aniyah McFarland finished with four points and led the team with 10 rebounds.
Callaway improved to 8-5 overall and 3-1 in region play. The Cavaliers will have a massive region matchup on Friday night when region-leader Morgan County comes to town. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
