Robert Theodore “Theo” Copeland, a beloved father, friend, and legendary member of the fly fishing community, passed away on Jan. 14, 2025 due to complications from Pneumonia.
Born on June 5, 1961, in Birmingham, Alabama, to Dr. Robert and Jenny Copeland, Theo’s life was one of adventure and an unwavering connection to nature.
Theo’s passion for the outdoors laid the foundation for his remarkable career. In 1987, Theo founded the Appalachian Angler in Boone, NC, a business that would revolutionize guided fly fishing in the region. Shortly after, his twin brother Hayden, “Hado,” joined him as an indispensable partner. As the first to guide anglers in a drift boat down the Watauga River and the first guided fly fishing, float trip, and light tackle outfitter on Northeast Tennessee tailwaters, Theo established a groundbreaking venture that solidified his reputation as a pioneer of guided fly fishing. Theo’s advocacy for “catch-and-release” was a practice he championed to safeguard wildlife and preserve ecosystems.
In 1989, Theo went on to operate float fishing expeditions on the Kanektok River in Alaska, completing 147 one-week trips spanning 100 miles each. The loyalty of his clients was unmatched, with some returning every season for over 24 years.
Theo also spent winters on the flats of the Bahamas with Hado on bonefishing expeditions in South Andros. Their bond as identical twins was evident in their teamwork and shared humor, making their ventures uniquely memorable.
Theo’s rugged charm and warmth were unmistakable. Mentoring young guides who became some of the Southeast’s finest, he inspired them with his skill and passion, earning the nickname “Captain.”
Beyond his accomplishments on the water, Theo was an avid reader with a deep appreciation for American history and Southern heritage. He was a man of immense generosity, who left an indelible mark on all who knew him.
He is survived by his daughters, Jenny Maclain (Copeland) Davies and Savannah Joyce Copeland, as well as his grandson, John “Jack” Robert Davies. He was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. Robert and Jenny Copeland; his twin brother, Hayden McTyiere Copeland; and his beloved white lab, Scout.
A pioneer of fly fishing in the Appalachians, Theo’s contributions went beyond technique; it was his captivating storytelling, ability to teach, and profound connection with others that made him an icon.
Theo Copeland will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. As we celebrate his life, we honor a man whose adventurous spirit defined him as truly one of a kind.
