It was complete and utter domination on Monday night for the Callaway girls basketball team as they dispatched region opponent Pike County with ease, earning a 61-12 win on senior night.
The Cavaliers meant business from the opening tip and scored the first 20 (!) points of the game. The Callaway lead sat at an astounding 22-2 at the end of the first quarter.
The home team continued to pour it on from there, taking a 41-7 lead at halftime.
The Pirates found little room to operate on offense as the suffocating Callaway defense met them at every turn. The Cavaliers ended the game with 17 steals. ShaKenya Wortham led the team with five of those steals.
Pike County would not even crack double figures until the waning moments of the fourth quarter.
With an insurmountable lead at halftime, Callaway coach Deyano Martin was able to go deep into his bench and get some young players valuable varsity minutes. The offense stagnated in the second half, but the defense continued to squeeze the life out of the Pike County offense. The Cavaliers outscored the Pirates 6-0 in a lackluster third quarter.
A shortened fourth quarter spared the Pirates any further misery.
Senior Raniya Mahone ensured her senior night was special, scoring a game-high 22 points — 20 of which came in the first half. She capped off her second straight game with a double-double, hauling in 11 rebounds on Monday.
Aniyah McFarland was the only other Cavalier in double figures with 10 points.
Callaway improved to 12-7 overall and 7-2 in region play. The Cavaliers will play their final regular season home game against Harris County on Tuesday before wrapping the regular season on Friday away to Morgan County.
