LaGRANGE – On your mark. Get set. Read!
The 16th Annual Certified Literate Community Program 5K is scheduled to take place starting at the square downtown on Saturday night. The night run has included approximately 200 runners and spectators in the past, and organizers plan to hold a contest for the Literacy Light Award for the third year in a row. The award goes to the person who is the most decked out in glowing attire for the race.
All net proceeds from the race go to Troup County CLCP, a group that was founded in 2002 and advocates literacy within the community through projects such as the Dictionary Project, Books for Babies, and various scholarships.
Country/Southern rock group, the Smokey Road Band, is slated to perform at the event starting during registration. Runners will also receive sweet tea and a barbecue sandwich from Country’s BBQ according to event organizers.
Registration for the 5K and one-mile runs is $20 until Wednesday or $25 on the day of the race. The one-mile for children 12 and under is $15 through Wednesday or $20 on the day of the race. Prices are reduced by $5 without a race day shirt. For the “Tot Trot” the cost is $5 or three children’s books. Online registration is available at http://www.active.com/lagrange-ga/running/distance-running-races/leggin-it-for-literacy-5k-1-mile-fun-run-tot-trot-2016?int=.
Registration is scheduled to begin on the square at 5:30 p.m. The Tot Trot is set for 7 p.m. with the other races to follow.
