LaGRANGE – Deciding whether to make the right decison or wrong decision in life is what local students will have to face one day. High school freshmen attending the sixth annual Teen Maze made are making some of those choices this week in a controlled environment.

Teen Maze is an community-wide event put on by the Troup County Health Department that aims to help youths prepare for those inevitable tough choices they will come across and encourage them to make the correct decision that will better serve them in their future.

On Wednesday, the event featured numerous stations that centered around multiple issues that teenagers go through daily like pregnancy, driving under the influence, texting while driving, STDs (sexually transmitted diseases), drugs, alcohol, adoption, parenthood and other real-life simulations.

The point Teen Maze volunteers want to make is the severe consequences that possibly await the youths if they go down the wrong path.

Students were able to participate in driving a golf cart while texting on their phone, while some were wearing goggles to simulate intoxication as they ran over traffic cones.

There was a table full of pamphlets covering extensive information on STDs that students could pick up, as well as areas with information on abstinence and peer pressure and even what to expect on a first date.

A station dedicated to preparing youths on how to hold a baby, change its diaper, and put the child in a car seat was also available.

Students were able to experience the feeling of graduating high school by dressing up in caps and gowns, walking on stage, and receiving their diploma from an actor posing as the principal.

Teen Maze will continue today from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Callaway Conference Center.
