HOGANSVILLE – He’s made the most of his one and only season as a cross-country runner.

Callaway’s Jason Freiberg decided to join the team for his senior season, and that proved to be a fruitful decision.

Freiberg has developed into the team’s number one runner, and he finished fourth in last weekend’s Region 5-AA meet while posting a time of less than 18 minutes.

On Friday, Freiberg and his teammates will be on the course in Carrollton for the Class AA state meet.

Joining Freiberg at state will be teammates Calik Kemp, Ian Dougherty, Matthew Freeman, Hayden Taylor, Dylan Mowery, and Sean Freiberg.

Those runners helped Callaway finish second in the region meet to Lamar County.

Each one of Callaway’s runners posted a personal-record time in the region meet.

“We were really excited about it,” Callaway coach Josh Ghobadpoor said. “I told the guys afterward, I couldn’t ask anymore from you than to run your fastest race of the year. That’s what all those guys did. They ran their fastest time of the year, all seven of the guys had PR times. Those guys went out and they ran until they dropped basically.”

Among the runners posting a personal-best time was Jason Freiberg, who had a time of 17 minutes, 52 seconds on the 3.1-mile course.

It was the continuation of a stellar season for Freiberg..

Ghobadpoor is also Callaway’s wrestling coach, and he watched Freiberg reach the state sectional in his first season participating in that sport.

“If you know Jason, and you know what he’s all about, and having got to go through last season of wrestling with him, it doesn’t surprise me,” Ghobadpoor said. “He is going to give his best effort, no matter what. His first year in cross country, and he’s setting the school record He’s a pretty amazing kid.”

Kemp is also a first-year runner, and he has excelled as well.

At the region meet, Kemp finished seventh with a time of 19:08.

Dougherty (19:36), Freeman (19:48) and Taylor were 12th through 14th, respectively, and Mowery (20:21) was 16th.

Sean Freiberg (22:51) was Callaway’s seventh runner.

This will be Callaway’s second appearance in Carrollton this season, and Ghobadpoor hopes that will help the runners be more at home on the difficult course.

“They’ve seen it,” Ghobadpoor said. “And that’s something we try to keep on our schedule, because they know what it’s like, and it’s not far away for us. So they’ve run it before, and they understand it’s not a PR course. You’re not going to have your best time on it because there’s a lot of hills, and a lot of turns. There’s more runners on the course as well.”
