LaGRANGE — A national NAACP-coordinated march from Selma, Alabama, to Washington, D.C., is scheduled to pass through Troup County on Friday and stay through Aug. 10.

America’s Journey for Justice, a nearly 900-mile march to raise awareness on the subjects of race relations, voting rights and economic and criminal justice is scheduled to arrive at LaGrange College on Friday evening and will host teach-in events along with daily 20-mile marches over four days, according to Ernest Ward, the president of the Troup County NAACP.

All of the events are free and open to the public.

“America’s Journey for Justice will enable us to come together and bring attention to and persuade the leadership in Washington to adopt an advocacy agenda that includes our lives — ensures a fair criminal justice system; our votes — uncorrupted and unfettered access to the ballot box; our jobs — promotes sustainable and living wages; and our schools — the need for equitable education,” according to a press release from the NAACP.

The NAACP encourages local participation in the march and teach-in events. Marchers are slated to travel 20 miles each day Aug. 8, 9 and 10. Participants are not required to walk the entire 20 miles. The marchers are asked to gather at 7 a.m. each day at LaGrange College to complete a leg of the march.

At the end of the first day and 20 miles, a bus will return the group to LaGrange College. The second day, a bus will depart the college and take marchers to the spot where they stopped the day before. At the end of the second day, the bus will bring marchers back to the college and on the third day, the bus will drop them off at the place the ended the day before. The marcher’s next multiday stop is scheduled to be Atlanta. Each day, the marching is scheduled to end at 4 p.m.

In the evening after marchers return, teach-in events will be held at the LaGrange College’s Mariotti Gymnasium. A different topic will be discussed each evening.

On Aug. 7, local organizers are slated to welcome the marchers and discuss a developing race relation program in Troup County. Economic justice is the topic slated for Aug. 8; voting rights for Aug. 9; and criminal justice reform for Aug. 10.
