LAGRANGE – It’s championship Saturday.

The Region 5-AAAA tournament will come to a close today with four games at LaGrange High, including the girls’ and boys’ championship games that both feature a pair of local teams.

All eight of the remaining teams are headed to the state tournament, but their seeding positions have yet to be determined.

First up will be the third-place game between the Troup Lady Tigers and Chapel Hill, and both teams are looking to bounce back from hard-fought losses in the semifinals.

Troup had a 13-point lead at the half, but top-seeded Sandy Creek rallied for a 44-40 overtime victory.

Chapel Hill rallied from a double-digit deficit in the second half to make a game of it before falling to LaGrange 55-53.

At 4:30 p.m., the Troup Tigers and Cartersville Purple Hurricanes will meet in the third-place game after both teams lost their semifinal games on Friday.

The day concludes with the two championship games.

First up at 6 p.m. will be a showdown between LaGrange and Sandy Creek for the girls’ championship.

LaGrange has won eight of its past nine games, and the only loss during that stretch came when it fell to Sandy Creek 53-42 on Jan. 28.

Sandy Creek also beat LaGrange 48-38 on Jan. 13.

In the final game of the day, LaGrange will be going for its third straight region title when it takes on Sandy Creek.

Those teams split their two regular-season games.

On Jan. 13, LaGrange built a big lead and then held on for a 68-64 victory.

In the rematch, it was Sandy Creek pulling away in the second half for an 85-63 win.
