HOGANSVILLE – The Callaway Cavaliers are well-represented on the Georgia Athletic Coaches Association all-state team that was selected earlier this month.
The GACA selected two all-state teams in each of the state’s classifications.
In Class AA, there was a north all-state team for players in regions five through eight, and there were five Callaway players on that team.
Among that group was linebacker Michael Freeman, who was selected as the Class AA north defensive player of the year.
Freeman had a phenomenal senior season in helping the Cavaliers go 13-1 and reach the semifinals of the state playoffs.
Freeman, who signed with Mercer, had more than 100 tackles and was the team leader in that category.
Joining Freeman on the all-state team is junior Lichon Terrell, who had a dominant season on the defensive line.
Three members of Callaway’s high-powered offense made the all-state team.
Quarterback Dylan Johnson, who set single-season school records for touchdowns and passing yards, was one of the three.
In Callaway’s 35-34 win over Screven County in the state quarterfinals, Johnson led the Cavaliers on a 98-yard touchdown drive in the closing moments.
The man who finished that drive with a 47-yard touchdown catch, Braylon Sanders, also made the all-state team.
Sanders had 16 touchdown catches, including two in the second half of the Screven County game.
Sanders also returned a kickoff for a touchdown against Screven.
DJ Atkins, who had a fantastic junior season, made the all-state team as well.
Atkins ran for more than 2,000 yards with 14 touchdowns.
