LaGRANGE — Firefighters rescued an elderly woman and dog from a house fire Friday evening on Cosby Drive, and one firefighter was treated for minor injuries received in the blaze.

LaGrange firefighters were dispatched to 216 Cosby Drive at 8:32 p.m., according to LaGrange Fire Lt. Chris Taylor. The homeowner was reported by 911 to be out of the residence, Taylor said, but an elderly female had gone back inside when firefighters arrived at 8:38 p.m.

“Firefighters pulled one fire attack hose line and entered the structure with flames showing in the kitchen area,” Taylor said. “A second firefighting unit entered the structure and began search and rescue operations, and quickly found an elderly female disoriented in the living room area.”

Firefighters took the woman out of the home and handed her over to medical personnel.

“The elderly female was overcome by smoke, but was treated at the scene by EMS personnel,” Taylor said.

Shortly after finding the woman, the firefighters also rescued a dog from the fire. The dog was uninjured.

One firefighter received what Taylor described as minor injuries at the scene and was taken to West Georgia Medical Center, where he was treated and released.

The fire was under control by 8:58 p.m., Taylor said. The fire damaged the kitchen and attic area of the home with smoke and heat damage throughout. Cost of the damage was estimated at $33,000.

Taylor said fire investigators determined the cause of the fire was “accidental cooking.”
