The Sunsets at Sweetland series begins Friday night with a showing of “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.”

The movie, which was released in 2016, will be the focus of the night, but it will be far from the only thing going on at Sweetland Amphitheater. The night is being advertised as picnic friendly, meaning both outside beverages and food are allowed, along with picnic blankets and chairs. Gates open at 6 p.m.

“We hope it’s a night that people can come, relax, visit with their friends and let the kids have some fun in downtown in LaGrange,” said Barbie Watts, director of promotions and marketing for the Downtown LaGrange Development Authority, which is organizing the series.

Local musicians from the Hillside Front Porch Collective will play live music from the showmobile stage beginning at 7 p.m. After sunset, the movie will be shown on an outdoor screen.

Local vendors will be available throughout the evening. Frios gourmet pops, Kona Ice, Holloway’s pork skins, popcorn, cotton candy, candied apples and soft drinks will all be for sale. Wild Leap Brew craft beer will be on tap and wine will be available by the glass.

Later this summer, the second and third part of the Sunsets at Sweetland series will be held. The next one will be June 30 for a Red, White and Blue Friday celebration and the movie Sing. On Aug. 4, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them will be shown.

Before Sweetland Amphitheater opened, the Sunset series was held at Lafayette Square. At the amphitheater, Watts said a bigger screen can be used and more people can attend.

She said by the end of the night, around 500 people are expected to attend Friday’s event.

“There is more room to spread out, and we have the opportunity to have more things going on other than just a movie,” Watts said. “It’s been great to have it at Sweetland. We’ve been able to expand the event and offer more activities.

Farmer’s Market Opens

LaGrange’s Market on Main will be open for the first time Saturday from 8 a.m. until 10 a.m. Vendors arrive at the market at 7:30 a.m. and will remain open until closing at 10 a.m.

The market is located on the corner of E. Depot and Main Street, next to the Carmike Cinema building.

Vendors will sell vegetables, jams, jellies, fruits and many other types of fresh produce.

Tour of Hill View Cemetery

Troup County Historical Society’s Archives and Legacy Museum will hold a walking tour Sunday at 2 p.m. The tour meets at 2 p.m.

The tour will focus on the history of our colleges. Anyone who attends is asked to wear comfortable shoes and a hat.
