With students returning to school next week, now is a great time for locals to enjoy a fun weekend before the demands of school and fall sports become the determining factors of weekend agendas.

This weekend will kick off on Friday with the ever-popular Sunsets at Sweetland series featuring The Headhunters and the film “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.”

The event will take place rain or shine, though food vendors may be limited if the weather is unfavorable.

“We are expecting a strong finish,” Sweetland Director Becca Eiland said. “We are treating it as a kind of last blast of summer before school gets back. It looks like the weather is going to cooperate, and we will have great local music.”

This will be the end of Sunsets at Sweetland’s 2017 series — though there is still one concert left in the Summer Concert Series — and limited concessions from local vendors including Mighty Joe’s and Frios will be available at this picnic approved event where guests will be encouraged to enjoy a meal on the great lawn during the music and film.

If you would rather listen to a little country music, Travis Meadows will be performing songs on everything from God to cancer to learning to drink his coffee black at Pure Life Studio at 206 Clark St. starting at 7 p.m.

The Nashville artist has released two albums and is known for his songwriting ability.

Farmer’s markets

Saturday will start bright and early with the Market on Main, which takes place behind the cinema on the corner of Main St. and E. Depot St. from 8 to 10 a.m. The event features fresh, locally grown produce and locally made products.

The West Georgia Farmer’s Cooperative will host a farmer’s market at 100 Union Street between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. featuring local meat, vegetables and baked goods. The market is a participant in Georgia Fresh for Less which means that EBT and SNAP customers will be able to double the value of their purchases.

Sim’s Farm will also host a farm day from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. featuring local meat, produce, crafts and more at 10 Bailey Rd.

If you would rather curl up with a good book then stand out in the sun though, the Friends of the LaGrange Memorial Library will be hosting their monthly book sale on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
