What could have been was the story of the day.

The Callaway Lady Cavaliers had ample scoring opportunities during Wednesday’s home softball game against Upson-Lee, but they never plated more than one run in an inning on the way to a 7-3 loss.

The game ended with the bases loaded and the tying run at the plate in the bottom of the seventh inning.

“We did enough damage to worry them, but we just couldn’t get the big hit,” Callaway coach Ashley Summerlin said. “That happens sometimes. We had runners on I think in every inning but one. I think we left 10 or 11 runners on base.”

Callaway (6-6) will play a pair of games in Bowdon on Saturday before beginning its Region 5-AA schedule on Tuesday against Lamar County.

Summerlin is hopeful that senior shortstop Kelly Carlisle, who has been out of action for three weeks with a broken finger, will be back in the lineup next week which will give the offense a lift.

“We have two big games this weekend before we begin region,” Summerlin said. “We’ll continue to look at girls, and hopefully we’ll get Kelly back.”

In Wednesday’s game, the Lady Cavaliers made some noise in the bottom of the seventh after falling behind 7-2.

With the bases loaded, Lexi Furgerson walked to drive in a run and make it a four-run game, and the bags were still full with just one out.

A strikeout and a pop-out ended the threat, though, and Upson-Lee walked away with the win.

Jenkins had a big day at the plate for Callaway with three hits, including a double.

Lydia Bartlett had two hits and a walk, and Lindsay Cofield had an RBI single in the fifth inning.

Leijorey Sanders, Jasmine Dukes, Kourtney Grier and Kailea Speer each had hits for Callaway.

Jenkins was Callaway’s starting pitcher and she threw five innings and Skylar Rice finished it with two scoreless innings.
