NEWNAN – Through their first three games, the LaGrange Grangers were unable to put any points on the scoreboard.

That changed last week.

While LaGrange was unable to avoid a fourth straight loss, there were some positive signs in the 42-10 setback to East Coweta.

Most notably, an offense that has struggled to get anything going showed some signs of life.

The Grangers had a season-high 224 yards while also scoring their first points of the season.

Matt Rainey gave the Grangers their first points of the season when he made a 33-yard field goal late in the first quarter.

The field goal was set up by a Vondez Taylor fumble recovery when East Coweta’s punt returner lost the ball.

In the second quarter, the Grangers put together their first touchdown drive of the season.

Cornell Kendrick had a first-down run into East Coweta territory, and quarterback Jakoby Smith had a keeper to the 30-yard line.

Moments later, Smith threw a fade pass to Ogletree for a 23-yard touchdown, and Rainey made the extra point to cut East Coweta’s lead to 28-10 with 19 seconds left in the first half.

The momentum was short-lived.

Gerald Green returned the ensuing kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown, and East Coweta had a 35-10 lead at the half.

East Coweta scored the lone points of the second half with a third-quarter touchdown.

“We had some nice drives with our offense, which we haven’t had,” LaGrange head coach Dialleo Burks said following Friday’s game. “Defensively, we forced some turnovers.”

LaGrange is off this week, and it will face Central-Carroll in its Region 5-AAAA opener on Sept. 22.
