Over the weekend, Troup County saw as much snow as it has seen in several years, but is important to remember that winter has not even begun.

The winter solstice is Dec. 21, and this first blast of cold weather has likely exposed the holes in all of our winter planning.

Here are a few quick reminders to help you get through the next few months:

• Don’t forget to wrap faucet heads and pipes with insulation if you haven’t already.
• Remember to bring dogs and other pets inside during periods of extreme temperatures and inclimate weather.
• If you will be outside, remember to check the weather forecast and dress accordingly.
• Take advantage of programmable thermostats by setting the temperature at home (or your business) to a few degrees below your usual preference while no one will be home in order to save money on heating.
• If possible, replace thin curtains with thicker curtains that will better insulate your windows.
• Remember to have a professional trim back any limbs that hang over your home or business.
• The warming center is open anytime the temperature drops below 37 degrees and is located at 150 Lukken Industrial Drive.

We are glad that Troup County was able to make it through the winter storm with little trouble, and there may not be any more snow to come this year. However, cold temperatures will return and icy conditions likely will too. It’s best to be prepared.
