LaGRANGE — Thomas Moat was honored by the Board of Education on Thursday for being awarded the Professional Development Grant from the Georgia Teachers of English Speakers of Other Languages.

Moat is an English to speakers of other languages, or ESOL, teacher at Ethel W. Kight Elementary School. He was awarded $1,000 from the grant, which he used to purchase five Amazon Kindle tablets.

The tablets allowed him to incorporate the linguistic complexity and language usage his students need, said Karen Cagle, assistant superintendent of curriculum and instruction. By using this newly purchased technology, students were able to record home movies so they could relate school work to the activities assigned.

Board members also voted to adopt new definitions to their new weapons policy. The new policy specifies the definitions of a “firearm,” “dangerous weapon” and “hazardous object.”

The new policy also outlines the punishment for being found in violation of the policy. According to the updated policy, students may “be expelled for for a period of time not less than one year from the date of the violation.”
