A 4-year-old girl was transported to an Atlanta area hospital after being shot in the head Monday around 8:30 a.m, according to LaGrange Police Sgt. Robert Kirby.
The shooting took place at one of the apartments at the Benjamin Harvey Hill Homes on Whitesville Road.
The child was originally taken to WellStar West Georgia Medical Center before being transported to Atlanta for treatment. Kirby said she was listed in critical condition following a surgery in Atlanta.
The girl’s mother and two siblings — a 2-year-old and a 7-year-old — were at the home during the time of the shooting. According to Kirby, the shooting appears to be accidental and did not appear to be self-inflicted.
Kirby said the gun was secured, but the LaGrange Police Department has not released information about the weapon.
There has also not been information released on who the gun belongs to.
“I think there’s a lesson to be learned on gun safety here,” Kirby said.
“And of course, we would encourage people who own guns and who have small children to, A, keep the gun out of children’s reach, and, B, if you’re going to have guns in the house, it’s a good idea to educate children about guns and what they are because this thing can have a bad outcome when guns are in children’s reach and if they’re not sure it’s a real gun.
Kirby said no one has been arrested in the case.
