Shelter cats seek a ‘forever home’

Some local kittens are looking for a permanent home and LaGrange Animal Control is hoping the community will help them out.
The agency is partnering with Petsense to try and adopt as many cats as possible during the month of June. The two organizations are offering half off the cost of all cat adoptions at the shelter, 1390 Orchard Hill Road, and Petsense, 141 Commerce Ave.
“It helps us move the cats at a faster pace,” said Chris Bussey, LaGrange animal control supervisor. “Before, our cat room was at near capacity. Now, we only have 20 (cats), if that.”
Explained Matthew Wilson, Petsense store manager: “It’s one of our biggest attractions, especially for kids. We had one family come in and the kids got all excited about the cats. They stayed in here for 20 minutes to see which cat would best suit their family before they adopted one. I feel our Save A Pet center actually helps get the appeal out for cats, kittens and adoption.”
Wilson said this is the first time the store has partnered with the LaGrange Animal Shelter and so far the event has been a success. Since the beginning of June more than 15 cats and kittens have been placed in new homes.
Bussey “is having trouble keeping up with all the adoptions,” said Wilson. “A great goal would be if the shelter stays empty all the time.”
Bussey agreed, “That is a great goal to have.”
Adopting the animals is an easy process, Wilson said. Store employees will talk with folks first to make sure they are a good fit for the animal.
“We have some checks and balances that need to take place before we can adopt them out,” he said.
Added Bussey: “We want to make sure they have a forever home.”
The cost of cat and kitten adoptions will be cut in half through June – $25 for kittens and $8 for adult cats. That includes the cost of spaying and neutering the animals, plus all their shots.
