That’s more like it.

Before Monday’s game against Woodward Academy, Troup’s softball team had gone nearly a month without a victory.

Troup flipped that script against Woodward, rolling to a 16-0 victory in a game that was shortened to three innings because of the run rule.

Troup head coach Kayla Yeargin is hoping the win will give Troup some positive vibes heading into today’s Region 5-AAAA game against Cedartown.

Troup (6-14 overall) is 2-8 in the region, but it still has a chance to finish as high as fourth with a strong finish.

Troup is in sixth place in the region, just behind Cedartown, which is 3-6 in region play.

After today’s game, Troup finishes region competition with Thursday’s game at Central-Carroll.

“We were working as hard as we could for win, in any shape or form,” Yeargin said. “I think this is what we needed heading into a big game tomorrow. Hopefully the momentum will carry over.”

Troup put it away early, surging to a 9-0 lead after the first inning, and it added seven more runs in the second inning.

The game ended when Woodward Academy was unable to score in the top of the third.

Madison McCartney had two hits and three RBIs to lead the Troup offensive effort, and Tashauna Askew and Avery Pearson each had two hits and two RBIs.

Skye Loftin had a hit and an RBI, Kayla Lane and Olivia McInvale each had a hit, and Casey Sani and Hadleigh Livingston each had an RBI.

Pearson started and pitched two innings, and Mackenzie Miller threw a scoreless third inning to finish it.

While Troup has struggled to find success in region play, Yeargin believes her team can compete with anyone.

“We think we can stand up to any team in the region, and we want to put ourselves in the best spot possible,” Yeargin said. “You take one inning away in all the games, and we’re right back in there competing. Hopefully we can play spotless defense.”
