Halloween is coming, and the Troup County Archives is hosting its ghostly walking tours near the end of the month. The walking tours start in front of the archives and visitors will meet and hear stories from local historical figures.

Shannon Gavin Johnson, Troup County Archives director, said the walking tour this year is 1920s themed. Johnson said there will be 11 stories featured.

“When I first started talking about the idea of ghost tours, several members of the staff said ‘there aren’t any ghosts in Troup County.’ It’s not necessarily ghost stories as its stories of those who are no longer living, which in some ways, everything we deal with as a historical society are of those who are no longer living,” Johnson said. “It is not meant to be overly spooky or scary. Bloody figures aren’t going to be jumping out.”

Visitors will meet figures including child factory workers, a World War I soldier and Charlie Joseph.

“Charlie Joseph got his start here in the ‘20s,” Johnson said.

The tour ends at the archives where they’ll discuss 1920s spirituality and debunk the seances from that time.

“This is 100 percent family friendly,” Johnson said. “My children participated, did the tours last year and had a blast.”

Tours will be held Oct. 25-27 at 7 p.m. and will start at the archives at 136 Main Street. Tickets are $15 for adults and $12 for children 5 to 13-years-old.
