The Troup Tigers continue to climb the ladder.
Following last week’s 35-14 victory over the rival LaGrange Grangers, the Tigers have risen to sixth in Class AAAA in this week’s Georgia Sport Writers Association poll.
Callaway, meanwhile, remains second in Class AA after beating Spencer 30-7.
The poll is voted on by sports writers across the state.
In Class AAAA, defending state champion Blessed Trinity continues to lead the way, and it received all 12 of the first-place votes.
Cartersville, which will host Troup on Nov. 2 in a possible matchup of unbeaten teams, is ranked second, and Mary Persons, St. Pius X and Eastside round out the top five.
The rest of the top 10 is Troup, Marist, Flowery Branch, Burke County and Ridgeland.
Cedartown, Troup’s opponent this week, received votes but isn’t ranked.
While the showdown with Cartersville is a highly-anticipated one, Troup head coach Tanner Glisson said everyone is focused on Cedartown.
Cedartown earned Region 5-AAAA’s number two spot with a win over Troup last year.
“If we win Friday, we solidify no worse than second place,” Troup head coach Tanner Glisson said. “And it’s senior night. So if we win Friday, it guarantees these guys another home game. So it’s huge. And Cedartown has been a thorn in our side the last two years. So it’s really important that we play well.”
In Class AA, Hapeville Charter remains number one, even though it dropped its first game last week.
Hapeville Charter, which won the Class AA state title a year ago, lost to Allatoona 23-14 last week.
Callaway received two first-place votes and is second, and the rest of the top 10 is Rabun County, Bremen, Rockmart, Dublin, Vidalia, Washington County, Brooks County and Dodge County.
Heard County, which was ranked as high as second early in the season before back-to-back losses to Hapeville Charter and Rockmart, hosts Callaway on Friday.
Callaway can win the Region 5-AA championship with a win.
The number one teams in the other five classifications remained the same.
Colquitt County leads the way in Class AAAAAAA, Lee County is first in Class AAAAAA, Rome is tops in Class AAAAA, Calhoun is atop the Class AAA rankings, and Eagle’s Landing is first in Class A.
