LaGRANGE — The Troup County Certified Literate Community Program lights the way for literacy again as the 15th annual Leggin’ it for Literacy takes place Saturday.

The unique race, held at night, consists of three categories: the Tot Trot for children, 1 Mile Fun Run and the 5K. The event usually draws about 200 participants.

CLCP officials hope to raise $10,000 with this year’s event. The money will go back into the community to fund the projects used to promote literacy, like the donation of a dictionary to every third grader in Troup County.

“If you have an educated community you have a better lifestyle for everyone,” said Debbie Burdette about the importance of the CLCP and what the groups stands for.

Burdette, also known as the character “Mama Jama,” has been bringing the gift of reading to children in Troup County for many years.

Lisa Alford has participated in every Leggin’ it for Literacy race alongside her family.

“Literacy is crucial to the success of individuals in both the career aspirations and the quality of life,” said Alford. “Please come out and support this very important event and volunteer.”

She added that “Mama Jama” and the entire CLCP focus on literacy has been a part of her children’s life as they grow.

“The literacy program is such an important program,” Alford said. “The volunteers are such special people with huge hearts that want to see others succeed in life.”

This year’s race begins on Main Street in front of Golden’s Bike Shop with the Tot Trot at 8 p.m., and the Fun Run and 5K at 9 p.m. Anyone wanting to participate can pre-register at Country’s Barbecue at 124 Vernon St., online at raceroster.com or by submitting the paper application to the CLCP. Participants also may register 6:30–8:45 p.m. the day of the race.

Pre-registration is $25 and will increase to $30 on the day of the race. The Tot Trot is $5 or donation of three children’s books. The fee includes a shirt and food supplied by Country’s Barbecue. For more information check out the CLCP website at www.troupclcp.org.
