Waterfowl hunting season opened Saturday, and duck and goose hunters across Georgia should find similar wetland conditions to last year, according to experts with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources’ Wildlife Resources Division.

“Last year, many of the managed wetlands that provide habitat for migrating and wintering waterfowl on state-operated Wildlife Management Areas were in good condition,” WRD state waterfowl biologist Greg Balkcom said.  “And, again this year, conditions are good because of late spring and early summer rains, as well as rainfall associated with Hurricane Michael. WRD managed impoundments are flooded or near full, with good food production.”  

Duck season dates are Nov. 17 -25 and Dec. 8 – Jan. 27. 

Youth Waterfowl Hunting Dates are Nov. 10-11. On these two days, youth age 17 or younger may hunt specific migratory birds, such as ducks, Canadian geese and mergansers, as long as they are accompanied by an adult of at least 18 years of age (only the youth may hunt).
