Big weekend for Panthers

It was a winning weekend for LaGrange College’s men’s basketball team.
After beating Berry College 85-80 on Saturday, LaGrange College outlasted Birmingham Southern 80-67 on Sunday to finish with a 2-0 record in the Wyndham Classic.
LaGrange College improved to 3-1 heading into Tuesday’s USA South opener against Piedmont.
In Sunday’s game, Gary Bishop led the way with 19 points, and he was one of five LaGrange College players in double figures in scoring.
Bishop made 6-of-8 attempts from the field, and he was 5-of-7 on 3-point tries.
Jalen McCallum also shot well, making 8-of-13 field-goal attempts on the way to a 16-point night.
Jamison McCray scored 15 points, Julian Cameron added 13 points, and Travis Thompson came off the bench and scored 12 points.
It was tied 39-39 at the half, and LaGrange College outscored Birmingham Southern 41-28 in the second half.
In Saturday’s win over Berry, LaGrange College led 50-33 at the half before hanging on for the five-point win.
Jack McCormack led the Panthers with 16 points, and he was 5-of-9 on 3-point attempts.
Jalen McCallum made all six of his field-goal attempts on the way to a 14-point night, Travis Thompson added 13 points, and former LaGrange Academy standout Lincoln Anderson had 10 points.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL: LaGrange College finished with a 1-1 record in the USA South/SAA Classic that was held last weekend at Mariotti Gym.
After beating Berry College 51-42 on Saturday, LaGrange College fell to Oglethorpe 62-36 on Sunday.
Against Berry, Sadie Desroches and Mikelli Taylor each scored 11 points, and Maurilaren Farr chipped in with nine points.
In the Oglethorpe game, LaGrange College trailed 20-2 after the first quarter, and it was unable to recover.
LaGrange College opens USA South play on Friday at Berea.
