The Callaway Cavaliers took a break from region play to face a team coached by a familiar face.

Ashley Summerlin, who was an assistant coach at Callaway for 10 years, is now the head baseball coach at Port St. Joe on the Florida gulf coast, and on Saturday he brought his team north to play his former team.

The game went Port St. Joe’s way, which broke things open with three runs in the seventh inning on the way to a 7-2 victory.

In the second game of a doubleheader on Saturday, Port St. Joe lost to Northgate 9-4.

Callaway headed to the seventh inning against Port St. Joe facing a two-run deficit.

By the time Port St. Joe was done hitting in the top of the inning, though, it was ahead by five.

Drake Wade, who has been doing a phenomenal job from his leadoff position all season, had two hits and a run scored for the Cavaliers.

Jabari Smith had an RBI single in his only at-bat, and Braelin Mitchell and Brooks Bledsoe each had a hit.

Caleb Butts, who helped lead his team to a Class A state title last season, had a home run for Port St. Joes.

Dawson Wright, Jabari Smith and Drake Wade all pitched for Callaway.

Josh Butts got the complete-game victory for Port St. Joe, and he held Callaway to four hits while striking out eight batters.

Trailing 1-0, the Cavaliers tied it with a run in the bottom of the first inning.

Wade walked, and after stealing second and third, he scored when Trent Sheppard reached on an error.

The Cavaliers were down 4-1 when they scored their second and final run in the sixth inning.

Mitchell led off with a walk, and he later scored on a Smith base hit.

Callaway returns to Region 5-AA play with a home game against Temple on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.

Those teams will play a doubleheader at Temple on Thursday.

Callaway opened region play by losing two of three to Bremen last week.
