Callaway shrugged off a difficult start to take a three-run lead late in Tuesday’s Region 5-AA game, but it was Lamar County rallying for the 11-10 victory.

Trailing 7-0 after the top of the second inning, Callaway found its footing and was ahead 10-7 through five innings.

Lamar County rallied for four runs in the top of the sixth to take the lead, and it held on to open its region schedule with a win.

Callaway (8-3), which was also playing its region opener, saw its seven-game winning streak end.

Early on, it looked it was going to be a long day at the ballfield for the Lady Cavaliers, but they didn’t let the slow start derail them.

Callaway began its comeback by plating two runs in the bottom of

the second.

After Kourtney Grier and Faith Horton reached on errors, Lindsay Cofield’s base hit loaded the bases.

Mya Lawton came through with a sacrifice fly, and another run scored on an error to cut Lamar County’s lead to 7-2.

Callaway got another run back in the third inning.

Leijorey Sanders led off with a single, and she stole second and reached third on an error before scoring on McKenzie Rhodes’ bunt.

Trailing by four, Callaway exploded for six runs in the bottom of the fourth to take its first lead of the game.

After Cofield singled and Lawton doubled, Aaliyah Morman and Sanders reached on back-to-back RBI infield hits, making it a 7-5 game.

Two batters later, Chaple Butler ripped the ball to left field for a two-run single, and the game was tied.

Grier gave Callaway the lead with an RBI double, and Horton brought in another run with a base hit, giving Callaway a 9-7 lead.

Callaway added a single run in the fifth inning, with Cofield scoring when Morman reached on an error.

Callaway visits Heard County on Thursday.
