Mr. Howard Thomas Griffin, Sr.

Howard Thomas Griffin, Sr., age 94, passed away peacefully in his sleep early Monday morning August 19, 2019 at Springfield Place in Newberry, South Carolina. Mr. Griffin is survived by his two children Howard Thomas (Tommy) Griffin, Jr. (Terry) of Hogansville and Regina Griffin Smith (Allen) of Newberry, South Carolina, as well as five grandchildren, Haley Griffin Egesdahl (Brian) stationed in Germany, Jessica Smith Hudson (Brandon) of North Charleston, South Carolina, Elizabeth Smith Brissey (Robert) Auburn, Alabama, Matthew Sterling Smith of Charleston South Carolina and Caroline Sterling Smith of Newberry, South Carolina, and two great-grandchildren Greyson Luke Egesdahl and Abigail Elise Hudson.
Mr. Griffin was preceded in death by his wife, Eula Pearl Baldwin Griffin and sibling Horace Leon Griffin, Floyd Raymond Griffin, Billie June Griffin Hogan, and Lynda Griffin Marmon. Born in LaGrange, Georgia, he was the son of Thomas Lewis Griffin and Mamie Lee Harper Griffin.
Mr. Griffin served in the Air Force and was a veteran of World War, II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War before retiring in 1969. He was the owner of Harper’s Transfer in LaGrange for several years before working as an independent truck driver for Watkins Trucking and Sanders Trucking. He was employed at Trackmobile in LaGrange before retiring to devote his time in pursuing his passion of helping others. Mr. Griffin became active with Habitat for Humanity, SBC Disaster Relief, and SBC Baptist Builders as long as his health permitted.
He was a long time member of Second Baptist Church and served as deacon for many years. He was a freemason for sixty years.
The family will receive visitors at Hunter-Allen-Myhand Funeral Home, Friday, August 23, 2019 from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Funeral Services will be held at Second Baptist Church Saturday, August 24, 2019 at 1:00 p.m. with The Reverend Neil Stich officiating. Full Military honors will be accorded. Mr. Griffin will be buried Monday, August 26, 2019 in Opp Alabama, beside his wife of 55 years. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Second Baptist Church, 304 Fair Street, LaGrange, Georgia 30241.
