It was all Callaway.

The Callaway Cavaliers scored on their first possession during Friday night’s county showdown with the LaGrange Grangers, and they didn’t look back on the way to a 56-10 victory at Callaway Stadium.

It was an impressive performance for Callaway, which won its first game of the season after opening with a 10-7 loss to Opelika two weeks ago.

“I was really proud of our preparation during the off week and this week,” Callaway head coach Pete Wiggins said. “I’m proud of our kids. We faced a lot of adversity two weeks ago against Opelika, and we could have hung our heads a little bit and they didn’t. I think we’ve grown in two weeks as far as getting better, and I’m proud of the attitude throughout the two weeks of practice preparing for tonight.”

LaGrange was looking to build on its season-opening 24-9 win over Heard County, but it was unable to keep pace with a talented Callaway team.

“We know we’ve got to work, and we’re going to get better from it, or other kids are going to tap out and we’ll play with younger guys,” LaGrange head coach Chuck Gibbs said.

All of Callaway’s offensive weapons were on display during the game.

Jacob Freeman, Callaway’s gifted senior wide receiver, got behind the LaGrange defense and caught a 98-yard touchdown pass from Demetrius Coleman.

Charlie Dixon nearly covered the length of the field on a touchdown as well, going 88 yards for a scoring run late in the third quarter.

Cartavious “Tank” Bigsby, a senior running back who has committed to Auburn, had touchdown runs of 50, 27 and five yards, and Coleman got the scoring started with a 5-yard scoring run.

Callaway also scored on defense, with Cameron Smith returning an interception for a touchdown in the fourth quarter.

Callaway went to work on its opening possession, going 70 yards for the touchdown.

The big play on the drive was a 50-yard completion from Coleman to Antinez Blount.

Two plays later, Coleman’s 5-yard keeper gave the Cavaliers their first touchdown.

LaGrange’s first possession ended with a lost fumble at its own 20-yard line, and that led to a Bigsby 5-yard touchdown run.

Bigsby also ran in the two-point conversion attempt, giving Callaway a 14-0 lead less than four minutes into the game.

Later in the quarter the Cavaliers were backed up at their own 2-yard line following a Charles Crawford punt.

On first down, Coleman dropped back and heaved the ball more than 50 yards downfield and hit Freeman in stride, and the senior wide receiver raced the rest of the way untouched for a 98-yard touchdown, and Blake Eubanks made the extra point.

While the odds of going 98 yards in one play appear long, Coleman believes in himself and his teammates, wherever they are on the field.

“I think every play has a chance,” Coleman said.

The Grangers got on the board on their ensuing possession with a 30-yard field goal by Kaleb Ceja, cutting the Cavaliers’ lead to 21-3.

Any momentum the Grangers may have had disappeared quickly, though, with Bigsby ripping off a 50-yard touchdown run, and the Cavaliers led 28-3 with 18 seconds left in the first quarter.

After a scoreless second quarter, Callaway had a 28-3 halftime lead.

The Cavaliers padded their lead on their first possession of the second half.

Bigsby raced 50 yards before being tackled at the 2-yard line, and the all-state running back scored on the next play, and the Cavaliers led 35-3.

The Grangers answered with their first and only touchdown of the night, with Caleb Ross taking it the distance from 32 yards out, and the Cavaliers’ lead was 35-10 with 7:08 left in the third quarter.

Back came the Cavaliers, who put the ball in the end zone on their next possession, with Bigsby scoring on a 27-yard run, one play after Coleman and Blount hooked up on a 48-yard completion.

Dixon, who teams with Bigsby to provide a formidable one-two punch at running back, capped the offensive scoring for Callaway with an 88-yard scoring run late in the third quarter.

In the final quarter, Smith picked off a pass and raced 70 yards for the touchdown, and Eubanks made his sixth and final extra point.
