The US Army Corp of Engineers is hosting a cleanup of West Point Lake on Saturday, as part of National Public Lands Day. Several local groups will be part of the effort, including Chattahoochee Riverkeeper.  

Henry Jacobs, Riverkeeper’s outreach manager for the area, said the event helps keep the lake in good health.

“We have numerous places where trash and plastics accumulate,” Jacobs said. “It comes from upstream sources like Atlanta, but we are responsible locally too.”  

Riverkeeper tests weekly for water quality, and Jacobs said, “It’s a healthy lake, and we want to keep it that way.”

Joining in Saturday’s effort are Keep Troup Beautiful, as well as local Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts. In addition to shoreline cleanup, the scouts will be part of beautification projects. Danielle Clark of the Army Corp of Engineers said scouts will construct owl nest boxes and fish attractors.  

National Public Lands Day is the largest one-day volunteer event for America’s public lands, held every fourth Saturday in September. The West Point clean up is this Saturday, Sept. 28 from 8 a.m. until noon. Anyone interested in helping out can join the Chattahoochee Riverkeeper at Pyne Road Park at 8 a.m.
