Senior prom to be held Saturday

Saturday night is the Senior Prom, an event for Troup County residents age 55 and up. It’s being hosted by the West Point Active Life Center.
“We will have a full dinner, a professional DJ, and dancing, of course,” Staff member Carmen Rogers said. Jason Wells of Shutter Express will be there to take prom photos, which will be printed on site and given away free to participants.
The night includes the crowning of a king and queen, chosen by a peer vote during the prom. “If you’re there, you’re eligible, as long as you are 55 or older,” Rogers said.
Visitors will be welcomed by a red carpet, as the theme of the evening is Hollywood. The prom is an annual event, as Rogers puts it, “to give our seniors a good night out.”
Tickets are still available through 8 p.m. Friday for $25 at the West Point Active Life Center. No tickets will be available Saturday night.
“Council Member Sandra Thornton has spearheaded everything,” Rogers said. “We literally could not have done this without her.”
One of Thornton’s contributions was to gather the event’s sponsors, who donate prizes and help fund activities like the photoshoot. This year’s sponsors include Pokey’s, American SmokeHouse, Johnny’s Pizza, West Point Vision, the City of West Point and Shutter Express. Troup Transit will not be available to pick up people for the prom, but rides are available from the center for anyone citizen living in West Point.
“Just let us know you need a ride when you get your ticket,” Rogers said.
The Senior Prom is Saturday, Oct. 5 from 6 to 10 p.m. at the Depot in West Point.
