We’re officially within 10 days of Thanksgiving, meaning many of us will be running in and out of grocery stores over the next few days to ensure we have everything we need for the big holiday meal.

Turkey? Check. Ham? Check. Mashed potatoes? Check.

As soon as the turkey is gone, there’s always a few sure-fire signs of Christmas. One of them is the clanking of the Salvation Army bells, outside of stores in December.

It’s also a true reminder of the meaning of the season, as volunteers brave the cold to raise money for less fortunate people from our area.

Many of us in this office have spent some time ringing bells before, and we’ve got to tell you that it’s amazing how many people will stop and give a dollar or two.

It’s a reminder that most people are generous, despite some of the things that happen and are reported in this newspaper and other media outlets.

The Salvation Army is recruiting bell ringers right now, needing someone to cover Thursday, Friday and Saturday shifts, according to Cindy Watson, who has been volunteering for the Salvation Army for 20 years. Volunteers are asked to stay for a couple of hours, or to divide the day up to tag-team it with co-workers or family members.

It doesn’t take long, and it’s an easy way to give back and help others during this Christmas season.

We urge anyone with a little spare time and a giving heart to help out.
