LAGRANGE – Seven members of the Troup High football team were recognized when the all-Region 5-AAAA team was unveiled last week.

While the Tigers had their struggles last season and finished with a 1-9 record, there were a number of standout players on the team.

Three Tigers were second-team all-region players, and four others were honorable-mention selections.

Among the second-team players was running back Mess Bonner, who had a terrific senior season.

In his final high-school game, Bonner had three touchdown runs to help Troup beat Whitewater 28-0 in the season finale.

Bonner had numerous big plays during the season, including two long scoring runs against Whitewater.

Other big plays included a 90-yard touchdown run against Sandy Creek, a 69-yard scoring catch against Callaway, a 65-yard touchdown reception against Carrollton, and a 40-yard scoring run against Carver.

“I just try to give them a spark,” Bonner said late in the season. “I know I’ve got a chance of making a big play in a game. I feel right now, if I get past the D-line, if I get past the linemen, I’m gone.”

Also earning a second-team nod was one of the men who blocked for Bonner, offensive lineman Hudson Newton.

Newton, a senior, also saw significant playing time as a defensive lineman.

Troup’s other second-team all-region player is linebacker Austin Carter.

Among Troup’s honorable-mention selections is wide receiver Treymane Tolbert.

Camren Russell was an honorable-mention pick as a wide receiver as well, although he did most of his damage as a running back.

Also earning an honorable-mention nod is defensive back Macenta Stafford.

Woodward Academy dominated the all-region team.

Quarterback Ryan Glover was the player of the year, running back Elijah Holyfield was the offensive player of the year, and John Hunt was the coach of the year.
