Facing an overmatched opponent, the Callaway Lady Cavaliers did exactly what they were supposed to do.

Callaway jumped out to a big early lead, and it cruised to a 65-40 home win over a struggling Jordan team on Saturday.

The win gave the Lady Cavaliers a 3-3 Region 5-AA record, and they’ll begin the second half of their region schedule against the Temple Lady Tigers on Tuesday.

While always happy to get a win, Callaway head coach Deyano Martin said “I was kind of disappointed in the way we played. We won the game, but we missed layup after layup. Defensively I was proud. I thought we played with a lot of energy. I told them it’s great to win, and great job winning, but you play the game, and not your opponent.”

One player who has been producing throughout the season is sophomore guard Gabrielle Johnson, who has been the team’s leading scorer in nearly every game.

Against Jordan, Johnson made five 3-pointers and had a game-high 25 points.

Javonna Bradford added 11 points, Niakoe Burks scored 10 points, and Chaple Butler made two 3-pointers and had nine points.

Callaway had six region games remaining as it looks to climb the ladder.

Heard County, Lamar County and Bremen are tied for first place with 5-1 records, and Callaway is in fourth place at 3-3.

“Everybody has played everybody,” Martin said. “It’s up for grabs.”
