The Senate is now one week away from Crossover Day and given the rapid progression of the session, this next week will encompass much of what has occurred over the past four legislative days: engaging in extensive discussion on the passage of legislation. This is largely due to the finalizing of committee reports on

While Senate committees diligently worked to assess legislation for the floor, we also voted to pass a number of bills corresponding with our state’s mission to protect. The first bill is Senate Bill 301, which would allow a county sheriff to request that an inmate remain in custody of the Department of Corrections if the individual was charged with a misdemeanor or felony while in state custody. Generally speaking, SB 301 would allow local law enforcement officers to make a distinction between high and low-level threat detainees, so as to prevent instances of indoctrination. The second bill is Senate Bill 394, which would expand the authority of the Attorney General to investigate and prosecute certain crimes. Recognizing the prominent cases of human trafficking and gang-related violence in our state, preventing fraud and crime will ensure Georgia remains a great state in which to do business, work and play.

The last bill is Senate Bill 249, related to the Peace Officers’ Annuity and Benefit Fund. SB 249 would increase the monthly contribution amount for members of the Peace Officers’ Annuity and Benefit Fund, increase the monthly retirement benefits payable to these members, add jail officers to the list of eligible persons and revise the amount of fines from criminal cases remitted. This particular bill adds greater financial support to those who sacrifice their lives every day and I am especially appreciative of the addition of jail officers, who often work in understaffed areas.

While the complete legislative calendar has not yet been determined, next week the Senate is confirmed to meet for at least four days, with March 12 signifying the crucial Crossover Day. During this time, the Senate will see an influx in the amount of bills to be considered by the general body.
