Troup County had its first death related to COVID-19, according to Dr. Olugbenga Obasanjo, director of Public Health District 4, who confirmed the death on Thursday.
The patient was a 61-year-old female, who had underlying health conditions, according to District 4 Public Health.
Obasanjo said the death occurred Wednesday, and the person’s positive test results for COVID-19 came back on Thursday.
According to the latest numbers from the Georgia Department of Public Health, Troup County has 10 confirmed cases of COVID-19.
DPH reported 1,643 confirmed cases throughout the state with 56 deaths.
“This is not a joke,” Obasanjo said. “This, unfortunately, is the first arm of a wave that is coming and we are just getting the first taste of it. That wave has still not fully hit New York, and we are going to be feeling it shortly. This is not a joke.”
