Retired teacher Cathy Hunt is running for a second term on the Troup County Board of Education, District 5.

Hunt moved to LaGrange as a LaGrange College freshman. Upon graduation, she was hired to teach at Troup High and remained there until retirement.

While teaching, Hunt earned a master’s degree, served as chair of the English department, worked on system planning and curriculum committees, directed drama productions and organized travel opportunities for students. She was Troup County Schools’ Teacher of the Year in 2003.

“I’m very passionate about public education and the welfare of the Troup County School System

in particular,” Hunt said. “I found it difficult to be disinterested as a retiree. I thought my local experience could add valuable perspective to the board.”

Hunt says she is proud of the changes that the current board has overseen in the last three

years, most importantly the appointment of the new superintendent, adding “Dr. Shumate is a dynamic leader who is providing a much-needed shot in the arm for our system.”

She said the board has made it easier for citizens to comment at board meetings and made the community a part of the superintendent search.

“Graduation rates and test scores are up. It is crucial at this time to provide a cohesive and supportive board behind our new leadership so that we continue to improve,” she said. “I believe I am the candidate with the experience, spirit of cooperation and dedication to make the best decisions for the children. That is our ultimate ethical responsibility when faced with controversial decisions.”

Hunt is active in the LaGrange arts community and at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church. She has two

daughters who attended Troup County schools and graduated from college with honors.

Her husband Ron, an artist, is also a retired teacher.
