A LaGrange man was arrested on murder charges Friday night after allegedly shooting and killing a 56-year-old man on Brown Street.
According to a news release from the LaGrange Police Department, Charlestavious Dyer, 31, shot Willie Render Jr., 56, in the chest.
Dyer was charged with murder, possessing a weapon during certain crimes and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
At about 10:21 p.m. on Friday, officers responded to an incident of a person shot and found Render, who was taken to WellStar West Georgia Medical Center where he was pronounced deceased.
Authorities say witnesses at the scene gave officers a description of the suspects and the vehicle. A vehicle matching the description was located on Cedar Street within an hour by police, as well as the alleged shooter, identified as Dyer.
LaGrange Lt. Dale Strickland said police found Dyer standing outside of the vehicle and was taken into custody without incident.
Strickland said witnesses said there were two people in the vehicle — Dyer and the driver. He said, based on the LPD’s current information, the driver was not involved in the criminal aspect and wasn’t aware Dyer had just shot somebody.
Strickland said the investigation has revealed that the incident appeared to stem from the amount of drugs consumed and the value of drugs, but there wasn’t an exchange of money between individuals. Strickland said the argument between the two men became heated, and Dyer pulled a gun and fired at Render.
Strickland said the two individuals did have previous interactions before Friday night. He said Dyer was on active felony probation from Fulton County cases and recently moved to LaGrange between two and six months ago.
According to Fulton County Jail records, Dyer had been arrested 18 times, dating back to May of 2006, most recently in August of 2018 for a probation violation involving drug charges.
Dyer is currently being held at the Troup County Jail.
