The Georgia High School Association voted Monday to move the start of the football season back two weeks, according to minutes from the meeting available on the GHSA website.

The first games of high school football season will now be Sept. 4. The rest of the football calendar will remain as is, meaning football conditioning will begin July 27. 

GHSA is still planning a ten-game regular season and a full, five-week playoffs.

All other GHSA fall sports, including cross country, softball and volleyball, will remain on schedule, according to the minutes from the meeting.

Earlier in the meeting, the GHSA board voted 8-4 against a motion to keep the GHSA calendar the same.

“They are giving us more time for school to be in and be better prepared for what’s going to transpire when we do have a first football game,” said Chip Medders, Assistant Superintendent for Maintenance and Operations, which includes overseeing athletics.

“I think it’s a good thing, and I think our coaches will probably be happy to hear it. It gives them a little more practice time and a little more preparation for what we are up against to make sure our fans and student athletes are safe.”
