In its Wednesday work session, the West Point City Council discussed approving a vehicle donation from Kia Motors Manufacturing Georgia. If approved, KMMG would donate five vehicles to the city.
“KMMG has agreed to donate five vehicles to the city to be used in the police department for administrative purposes,” said City Manager Ed Moon.
Councilwoman DeeDee Williams asked if the vehicles would be used for patrol, and Moon said they would not be.
The donation would be for a term of two years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first. KMMG has the option to extend the donation period and the vehicles are donated for the purpose of quality evaluations. According to KMMG, the vehicles donated will be five quality-controlled Kia Optimas.
Also discussed at the work session was the potential rollback of the millage rate. The current millage rate for the city of West Point is 9.1810 and the rollback would take it down to 8.9710. If approved, the rollback would result in a revenue increase of $424,673 to the city.
“If we leave it at 9.181 for 2020, according to the state, with the exemptions and reassessments that would constitute an increase to our citizens of 2.34 percent,” said City Clerk Richard McCoy.
Williams asked if it was possible to make a motion to lower this mill rate further than the recommended 8.9710.
Both Moon and McCoy affirmed that statement by reiterating that the mayor and council sets the millage rate.
Moon cautioned, however, that there are many factors to consider when discussing further reductions in millage rate.
In other business, the council discussed five board appointments, all of which will remain the same with the current board member continuing to serve.
