The defending state-champion LaGrange Academy Lady Warriors got their new season underway with an impressive 9-1 victory over Shaw on Friday in the Callaway Classic at Shuford Fields.

Amber Corley got the complete-game victory, and LaGrange Academy started quickly with five runs in the first inning on the way to the blowout win.

“We made a few mistakes, and that’s to be expected right now,” said Charles Parker, who has guided LaGrange Academy to six GISA state titles. “I was real pleased with how they played.”

Also on Friday, Callaway began its season with an 18-3 victory over Trinity, while Troup fell to Brookstone 7-0.

Callaway, LaGrange Academy and Troup, along with LaGrange High, will play two games apiece on Saturday.

In LaGrange Academy’s win over Shaw, Corley was sharp, throwing four scoreless innings after giving up a first-inning run.

Trailing 1-0, LaGrange Academy went to work with five runs in the bottom of the first inning.

LaGrange Academy took advantage of six walks in the inning, and Lanie Lackey had a two-run base hit to get the scoring started.

The Lady Warriors pushed two more runs across in the second inning.

After Corley singled, Lehman drove in a run with a hit, and Lackey followed with an RBI double to make it a 7-1 game.

LaGrange Academy capped the scoring with two runs in the fourth inning.

Caley Worsley walked with the bases loaded to bring in a run, and Kelsey Cotton’s infield single drove in another run.

Callaway had no trouble with Trinity in a game shortened to three innings because of the run rule.

Callaway took control early with five runs in the first inning, and it continued to pour it on en route to the blowout win.

Everyone in the lineup contributed, including leadoff hitter Chaple Butler, who was 3-for-3 with a walk, and she had a two-run single in the third and final inning.

Alora Vetsavong had three hits with an RBI single, Mya Lawton, Mikayla Speer and Lindsay Cofield each had a hit and two walks, Horton had a hit and a walk, Tyterria Godwin had an RBI double, Chelsey Courson had a single, and Aaliyah Morman walked twice.

Troup was unable to get much going in its 7-0 loss to Brookstone.

Haley Cotton and Emilee Johnson had Troup’s two hits, and Maggie McDonald and Ramsey Clark each pitched two innings for Troup.
