James Brogdon Nichols passed away on August 15, 2020 at South Miami Hospital, Miami, Fl after battling complications from COVID-19 infection. A former resident of LaGrange, after he retired from Milliken and Company in 2001 he divided his time between residences in Key Colony Beach, FL, LaGrange GA, and Lake Hartwell, Anderson, SC.
The son of the late John LeRoy Nichols and Elizabeth Brogdon Nichols, Brogdon was born in Sumter, S.C. and was a graduate of Edmunds High School in Sumter. He received his B.S. degree in Chemistry from Clemson University in 1961. He was 82.
Brogdon was a veteran of the U.S. Army and was stationed in Korea during 1962 and 1963 where he served as a First Lieutenant in the Intelligence and Security Division.
He is survived by his wife Elizabeth Gail Barnes Nichols of LaGrange and two sons—Jim Nichols of Greenville, SC ( wife Shelly Rose and grandsons, Jonathan, Jacob and Will ) and Thomas Hugh Nichols ( wife Debra Lynn of Jacksonville, FL )
He was an elder in the First Presbyterian Church of LaGrange and an active member of the First Presbyterian Church in Anderson, SC. Also, he was a member of the Kiwanis Club of Anderson SC.
Brogdon had a passion for helping others.
He participated in many mission trips around the world, giving generously of his time and resources as a testament of his caring nature.
Brogdon’s hobbies included boating, scuba diving, and fishing with his family and friends, which brought him much joy. He loved Clemson University and always looked forward to attending football games and tailgating every fall with family and friends.
A funeral service with military honors will be held at the M.J. “Dolly” Cooper Veterans Cemetery in Anderson, SC on Friday, September 18 at 3PM. Dr. Dennis Tedder of the First Presbyterian Church in Anderson, SC will be officiating. Due to the current COVID pandemic, attendance is limited per cemetery facility guidelines. It is suggested that only close family attend and seating will be provided for those individuals. Others are asked to wear masks, practice social distancing and remain near their vehicles.
