LAGRANGE – It seems a given that the Callaway Cavaliers are going to be the number one seed for the Region 5-AAA tournament, but there is still work left to do.
The Cavaliers are 8-0 in the region, and they’ve won all but one of those games by at least 20 points.
With two region games remaining, though, the Cavaliers still need one more win to wrap up the top seed.
Callaway’s first chance to make that happen will come with today’s game at Pepperell, which is in second place in the region with a 6-2 record.
Callaway then wraps up the regular season with Friday’s home game against Rockmart, which is third in the region at 4-4.
One of Callaway’s many blowout victories came against Pepperell.
Pepperell came into that game with an eight-game winning streak, and it was 4-0 in the region at the time.
The Dragons were overwhelmed by the Cavaliers, though.
The game was effectively over after the first quarter, with Callaway soaring to a 31-9 lead, and it went on to claim a 76-54 win.
Joe Brown scored 19 points in that game, and he was one of four Callaway players in double figures.
Dre Martin added 18 points, Ernest Patillo scored 13 points, and Braylon Sanders had 12 points.
If Callaway were to slip up against Pepperell today, it could still secure the number one seed with a win over Rockmart.
The Callaway girls’ team, meanwhile, heads into today’s game at Pepperell with a chance to sew up the region’s number two seed.
Callaway and Pepperell are tied for second place at 5-3 in the region, and Cedartown and Rockmart are tied for third at 3-5.
If Callaway beats Pepperell, it would be the number two seed, no matter what happens in Friday’s regular-season finale against Rockmart.
Callaway beat Pepperell 59-52 earlier this season, so a win tonight would give it the tie-breaker advantage if those two teams finish tied for second.
If Callaway loses tonight, it could still end up anywhere from second to fourth.
The LaGrange Grangers are sitting atop the Region 1-AAAAA standings heading into today’s road game at Harris County, but they’ve got two teams hot on their heels.
With Saturday’s big road win over Shaw, LaGrange (19-5 overall) is 8-2 in the region, but Northside and Carver are just one game back at 7-3.
Harris County is only 3-7 in the region, but it has been a tough opponent this season, although it was blown out by LaGrange 87-55 on Jan. 16.
Harris County has beaten Shaw this season, and on Saturday, it lost to Carver 80-77 in overtime.
If LaGrange beats Harris County, it would secure the number one seed with a home win over Northside on Friday in its regular-season finale.
The Grangers can finish anywhere from first to third in the region.
The Lady Grangers (9-11 overall) are 3-7 in the region, and they’re in fifth place with two regular-season games remaining.
First up, LaGrange will try to even the season series with Harris County.
On Jan. 16, it was tight the whole way, with Harris County hanging on for a 57-52 victory.
LaGrange also lost its earlier meeting against Northside, with the Lady Patriots rolling to a 64-42 victory.
The Troup Tigers head into their final two games of the regular season sitting in sixth place in Region 5-AAAA with a 2-6 record, and they have an outside chance to climb as high as third.
Today, Troup will be on the road against Fayette County, and it will be looking to turn the tables from the previous meeting between those two teams.
On Jan. 15, Fayette County overwhelmed Troup 53-27.
Troup finishes the regular season with Friday’s game at Carrollton.
Carrollton will try to avenge its 66-38 loss to Troup on Jan. 19.
LaGrange Academy’s teams will will play their final regular-season home games on Friday when they host Brandon Hall on homecoming night.
After road games against Solid Rock and Bethlehem Christian next week, LaGrange Academy will host the GISA Region 1-AA tournament beginning on Feb. 15.
