LaGrange residents are feeding the community and getting in to the holiday spirit this weekend.

GetFed will be handing out about 300 Thanksgiving meals to locals on Sunday Immanuel Ministries in LaGrange

The meals are free and available to anyone, though GetFed is targeting the homeless and less fortunate. The giveaway will start at 1 p.m. at 135 Buena Vista Ave. Meals are first-come, first-serve. GetFed estimates the food will be gone or mostly gone after an hour or two.

Instead of allowing people to eat indoors and on-site, GetFed is doing a takeout model to avoid the risk of COVID-19 spread. Recipients can expect to eat turkey, ham, cornbread, dressing, vegetables and dessert. Meals are funded by donations and grants.

Also on Sunday, ThreeLife Church is looking for donations to serve Thanksgiving meal kits to hundreds of families.

They’re requesting people bring turkeys, rice, yams, stuffing, cake mix, gravy mix, mac and cheese, cranberry sauce, canned vegetables, corn bread mix or mashed potatoes.

Threelife has been collecting food for the past few weeks but will accept food on Sunday from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.

At 3 p.m., the church will begin handing out the meal kits in a drive-thru line.

Downtown LaGrange is hosting its holiday sip and shop on Friday night, with shops open from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Shoppers can enjoy downtown stores after hours and special sales while sipping their drinks and perusing gifts.

Participating shops include Marketplace at LaFayette Square, Frios Gourmet Pops, Emberglow Handmade, R & B Consignment, Elliebelle’s Boutique, Merle Norman & Sugars Boutique, The Legacy Museum, LaGrange Art Museum, Plum Southern, Crave Cookies, The Mind Clothing, Splash Kitchens & Baths, Ye Olde Red Door Antiques, Fountain Gifts, Cochran Galler and Ressa’s Unique Boutique.

At the LaGrange-Troup County Chamber of Commerce Plaza, there will be an ugliest Christmas Mask Contest at the same time. The contest winner will receive a Holiday prize. Voting will occur online at Downtown LaGrange’s Facebook page.

Downtown LaGrange is also hosting a special Market on Main earlier in the day. From 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. The open-air market will be at the Main Street Promenade near Plum Southern and at Flag Pole Park.

Participating vendors include Artistry by Nancy, Barb’s Birdfeeders, Deer Foot Creations, Freita’s Fancies, Holloway’s Pork Skins, Saskia Soaps, Industrial Service Partners – Home Decor Division, Vontina’s Pet Treats and Luther Beasley, Malinda Brooks, Ed Brooks and KC Family Farm.

Another holiday tradition kicks off on Friday — Sweetland On Ice.

The season opening of the ice skating rink take place from 5 to 9 p.m. 

The covered, open-air rink has been built under the pavilion at Sweetland and covers 5,500 square feet.

Tickets range from $8 to $14, depending on your age and whether or not you bring your own skates.

There is also a reduced rate for groups of 10 or more. Each ticket includes 2 hours of ice skating.

Due to COVID-19, the facility’s capacity will be limited to 200 people. Hand sanitizing stations will be set up, and face masks are mandatory all season. Masks can be purchased at the front desk for $1.
