The upcoming Friends of the Library book sale from Jan 29. To Jan. 30, will be their last before the library closes for the renovation. 

“We hope and plan to be able to move into the new library but that is all tentative right now,” said FOTL Dan Baker. “The library has got to get their space set up first. So, it is all tentative right now. We may or may not be able to move in there and have a spot.” 

Baker said that they still plan to take donations.

During the sell, anyone who has ever wanted to pay whatever they wanted to for books can get their chance. 

Customers can name their own price for any of the books.

According to a press release from FOTL, for the first time, the special pricing option includes items in the bookshop, including lots and lots of fiction, very nice children’s books, DVDs, audio CDs, history, biography and more.

In addition, tables in the Fackler Room will be loaded with mass-market paperbacks, oversized books, CDs and other media.

Everything is ‘’name your own price.’’ 

Baker said that customers can pay whatever you think is fair.

The sale runs from noon to 5 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. Proceeds support library programs. The library closed Dec. 4 and be relocated in an unused part of Unity Elementary School on Park Avenue in LaGrange, the release said. Once set up with shelves, computers and circulation materials, the temporary space will open in early February. Renovations are estimated to take 12 to 14 months, so the library building will likely be closed for all of 2021.

The renovations will entail a full renovation of the building and entail a new layout, furniture and finishes, spaces for programming, including a larger meeting room, and “much needed” infrastructure improvements such as a new roof, humidity controls and new exterior surfacing. 

The Unity Elementary building’s gym, band room and cafeteria will be used under a leasing agreement with the Troup County School System, which owns the property. The Unity campus is also in use partially by Hillside Montessori School. 

Hillside Montessori is using two former preschool buildings separate from the main building.

The library has not been renovated since 1994. According to the release, after renovations are done, the library will be in its eighth version since establishment in 1921, when the LaGrange Woman’s Club opened and operated the city’s first public library in the Queenie Heard House.
