A Bible reading mixed with a moment of prayer will be held on LaGrange’s courthouse steps later this month.

The reading will happen July 14 at approximately 7:14 a.m. at each county courthouse in Georgia, a date and time that is significant to the Bible verse that will be read, said Becky Grubbs, who will read the passage at LaGrange’s courthouse.

Grubbs additonally serves on the Troup County School Board.

The basis for this reading is taken from 2 Chronicles 7:14 which reads, “If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves, and pray and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and forgive their sin and heal their land.”

“The point of this is that the entire Bible…is read over the state of Georgia and to ask the Lord to look out for us and forgive us for our sins,” Grubbs said.

The Bible is divided into 159 sections to be read in Georgia’s 159 counties, Grubbs said.

The scripture assigned to Troup County this year is 1 Kings 9-12. As in previous years, anyone who attends is given the opportunity to participate by reading.

The Statewide Bible Reading project was started in Iowa by Dianne Bentley in 2018.  Last year, 16 states and 57 countries participated. 

In LaGrange, last year’s Bible reading drew in 20 people from the area, a significant increase from the four people who participated in 2019, Grubbs said.

The goal this year is to expand the Bible reading in every time zone, Grubbs said.

This is the third year the interdenominational gathering will be held in Georgia. It is also the third year that every county in the state has had readers participating. In an hour or less, the entire Bible will be read over the state, Grubbs said.
