HOGANSVILLE — The Hogansville City Council met Monday and heard a request for more funding for an after-school program that’s helping students.

The council heard from Charon Prophet who spoke on behalf of Elevations to ask for additional funding.

Elevations is an after-school program that started when the Boys and Girls Club left the area. Elevations already received $15,000 from the city, but Prophet requested an additional $25,000 from the council for a sum total of $40,000.

“We realized, wow, we are way out spending way more money than we have coming in,” Prophet said.

He said the spending is due to needing sponsorship and the need to hire more teachers for the program.

“The main thing I’m concerned about is being able to support and continue to pay the teachers that we’re paying to come down to work with these kids,” Prophet said.

The program currently helps approximately 75 to 80 kids within the Hogansville community. It also promotes STEM projects with students and allows kids to foster their sense of entrepreneurship, Prophet noted.

“We have a full corner now, and it has a sign that says Entrepreneurial Corner where the kids come to me and give me the idea of what they want to run the business,” Prophet said. “We have some girls that come, and they start up and do bracelets. We have another set that is doing candles.”

Prophet’s presentation will be voted on during the next Hogansville City Council meeting in November.

Other items to be considered include an ordinance to clean up Hogansville downtown quarterly, an evaluation of street lights in the area and the consideration to purchase additional speed bumps.

The council also accepted a property donation that will be used for the development of the future Clock Park location.
