The LaGrange Police Department has sent eight of its officers to assist in Brunswick as the Ahmaud Arbery trial comes to a close.

“When the trial for Ahmaud Arbery started, there were a number of appeals from Glynn County and Brunswick for officers to assist [with] potential crowd control issues,” LPD Chief Lou Dekmar said.

LPD officers were sent to Brunswick Sunday and were originally set to come back Tuesday night but were requested to stay an extra day, to which they agreed. Some of the officers previously worked in last Tuesday’s 18-hour standoff on Sunny Circle Court, Dekmar said.

“We have a history of going around the state and helping with everything from the Olympics … to different protests around the state,” Dekmar said. “Likewise, if we needed assistance, all we have to do is call.”

As of Tuesday, the jury has been deliberating in the trial for Ahmaud Arbery’s 2020 killing. Gregory McMichael, his son Travis McMichael and William “Roddie” Bryan Jr. are charged with malice and felony murder after fatally shooting Arbery in Feb. 2020. The men claimed to be conducting a citizen’s arrest of Arbery.

Arbery’s killing became a national story after a video of his shooting was made public.
