Schools across Troup County celebrated in unique ways before Christmas break started last week. The students and staff of Callaway Elementary School celebrated with movie-themed halls and events.

The school chose a holiday-themed movie and fun activity for each day to get children and teachers in a merry mood.

Lindsey Binion, an instructional specialist at CES, said they coordinated the activities to go with the movies.

“Every day has a movie theme. This was Rudolph, so all the treats were red… We’ve done ‘It’s A Wonderful Life’ … We always like pick the movie cover and then just put a little saying like ‘it’s a wonderful life having you here at CES’,” Binion said.

Christy Washington, a teacher at CES, said she appreciates this extra effort by their administrative staff to help the faculty feel appreciated going into the holidays.

“It’s just been a wonderful surprise every morning we come in. It’s a busy time of the year at home and at school. It really makes our day to come in and feel appreciated by our administrators. They’re going above and beyond,” Washington said.

“They have things going on at home and at school, and they’re taking their time to make us feel really special.”

Regina Garrett, another teacher, said she was surprised by the festivities.

Garrett did participate in them and even wore a 2020 themed sweater for their tacky sweater day.

“This is probably the first school that’s had the holiday spirit and I’ve been teaching for 15 years. This is something out of the ordinary for me,” Garrett said.

Jameka Harper, another CES teacher, said the festivities were normal for her and she appreciates them, both as a teacher and a parent.

“This is normal for us. I love it as a parent. As a teacher, my daughter goes here, and she’s excited every morning to go down the hall and to just see the teachers,” Harper said.

“Too bad she didn’t come yesterday, [Binion] had on her Santa suit.”

Other schools in the school system had their own decorating contests and pre-holiday celebrations as well.
