It’s always an exciting time when a new business opens in the community. It is a sign of a city’s economic health and helps in recruiting other companies to the area. Often, new businesses come in the form of a restaurant.

Not this time. We reported in our Saturday edition about a new family entertainment business coming to West Point called Purge Nation, an ax-throwing venue.

Owned by Tammy Stephens and her son, Seth Heice, it will have ax-throwing lanes for adults and children, as well as dart-throwing. Customers will be able to play games such as tic-tac-toe, Zombies, Line-Up-4, Duck Hunter, and more by throwing their axes at projected targets. Digital scoring will make it easy for customers to keep track of their successes.

Don’t let the name or the activity fool you. Ax throwing is one of the fastest-growing family entertainment businesses in the nation. It has attracted more and more people to the sport and has grown so popular that in 2017 the World Axe Throwing League was formed to organize international competitions and is broadcast on ESPN.

We welcome Purge Nation to West Point — our area’s second ax throwing business — and wish it success as it gets started.
