HOGANSVILLE—Hogansville was recently hit with a tier 2 violation by the Environmental Protection Division of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources for having too much chlorine in its drinking water.

Hogansville City Manager Jonathan Lynn announced the violation at the Hogansville City Council Monday night. The city officially announced the violation Wednesday on its Facebook page. 

Lynn said there is no need for alarm at this time and that Hogansville’s water is otherwise safe to drink.

Per the city’s Facebook post, the violation does not pose a threat to the quality of the water supplied. There is no need to boil water or seek alternative water supplies, filtration systems, water softeners or anything of the like. 

“Residents should not be alarmed and do not need to seek alternative water supplies,” the post reads. “We are taking corrective actions to ensure that adequate monitoring and reporting will be maintained.”

The corrective actions will also be included in residents’ next utility bill and sent through Hogansville’s upcoming newsletter.

“We fully intend that once the water is tested again this quarter, the violation will be called,” Lynn said. “We are working with a third-party engineer, who is also our licensed operator for our drinking system. We are hoping to fix that line of communication to find out why we did not know about this before we got this letter.” 

The city will be flushing water lines to remove the excess chlorine, Lynn said.
